Welcome to a Teacher’s Road Map -
Your Career Journey!

This animation covers some key milestones throughout your teaching career and provides information on which of the four teacher associations (ATA, ATRF, ASEBP, and ARTA) you need to contact at each stage.

Life Events

Did you get married? Have a baby? Move? Congratulations on that major life event! Make sure you…

Planning for retirement

Frank has a meeting with an ATRF pension counsellor and he attends ATRF and ARTA seminars at a Teachers’ Convention.

What’s my Golden Number?

Retirement is a personal and often complicated decision. If you’re thinking of retiring, ATRF has pension counsellors who can provide the information needed to help you determine when the time is right.

Working past 70

Even though he is still an active teacher, once Frank turns 70, he will no longer receive benefits from ASEBP. He applies to become an ARTA member and enrols in the ARTA Retiree Benefits Plan.

Frank continues to participate in the Teachers’ pension plan with ATRF.

Early retirement

Frank chooses to retire at 58. He fills out the necessary pension forms and visits the ATRF website to keep up to date with Cost of Living Adjustments.

Frank joins ARTA. His first year of membership after retirement is free. He reaps the rewards of wellness information, advocacy efforts, and a robust discount program.

As an active ARTA member under the age of 65, Frank has the option to continue to receive health benefits from ASEBP, to enrol with the ARTA Retiree Benefits Plan, or to remain on his spouse’s plan until his working spouse’s plan terminates.

Retirement

Frank fills out the necessary pension forms and starts receiving his pension before age 71, as required by the CRA.

Adding your Spouse?

You can contact ARTA to add your spouse to your ARTA Retiree Benefits Plan.

Working while retired?

If you decide to go back to work in a teaching role after you’ve retired, this may affect your pension. Contact ATRF for more details.

Age 85

Frank earns a Lifetime Membership with ARTA and continues to enjoy an active and engaged lifestyle in retirement.
